A lift is one of the most critical pieces of equipment in a garage or workshop. A wrong choice lowers efficiency and creates safety risks. We recommend checking the following points before you buy.
Two-post or scissor?
Two-post lifts raise the vehicle from its lifting points and give wide access to the wheels, gearbox, exhaust and other underbody work. They are the most common choice for general service and are anchored to the floor.
Scissor lifts take up less space and stay low when not in use. They suit tyre, balancing, brake and inspection work, though underbody access can be more limited than with a two-post lift. They are often chosen where space is tight.
Capacity
Lift capacity must exceed the weight of the heaviest vehicle you will service. For passenger cars it is typically in the 3-4 tonne range; if you will also service light commercial vehicles and SUVs, consider a higher capacity. Do not choose a capacity right at the edge of your need.
Column spacing and lifting height
On two-post lifts, the drive-through width between columns must allow vehicles to enter and let you open the doors comfortably. Lifting height and arm reach should suit the vehicle lengths you handle. Check ceiling height too: a vehicle on a fully raised lift must not touch the ceiling.
Floor and installation
For anchored lifts, the thickness and quality of the concrete floor must meet the manufacturer's requirements. Do not install on cracked or weak floors. Plan the location for the electrical connection and, depending on the model, the air connection in advance.
Installation and commissioning should be done by qualified people, and periodic inspections and safety tests should follow the applicable regulations.
